Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Might Take Place Outside Night City
Published 21 May 2025
CD Projekt Red is currently developing a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed “Project Orion,” which could take the franchise beyond Night City into a brand-new setting. While the original game had a rocky start, its popularity surged following the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime and the Phantom Liberty DLC. The sequel was officially announced in 2022, though few concrete details have been shared so far.

Speculation about Project Orion includes the possibility of multiplayer features and a new protagonist, rather than continuing the story of V from the first game. Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, recently hinted that players will "visit another city" in the sequel, although he stopped short of confirming specific details. This has fueled rumors about possible settings like a futuristic version of Chicago or even locations off Earth, such as a moon colony.

Despite these teasers, it's unclear whether Night City will be left behind entirely or simply be one of multiple locations featured in the game. Pondsmith’s comment may have been unintentional, so fans should treat the information with caution. Project Orion currently has no official release window and is just one of several games CD Projekt Red is developing, including The Witcher 4, a remake of the original Witcher, a Witcher multiplayer project, and a new IP.
