Marvel Rivals has revealed a new Auto Chess-inspired game mode called Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol, launching on June 6 as part of the mid-season update for Season 2. This update follows the season's Hellfire Gala theme, which introduced new content including the debut of Emma Frost as a playable character and the Krakoa map. Various limited-time events have also been part of this season to keep players engaged.
In the new mode, players face off in six-player matches, each assembling a team of heroes to strategically battle on a board. Inspired by Dota 2’s Auto Chess, the mode lets players customize hero builds—such as an enlarged Venom who can devour enemies—and place characters based on tactical choices. While popular characters like Doctor Strange and Iron Man are shown in the trailer, not all heroes from the full roster are currently available in this mode.
Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol will be available for a limited time as an experimental mode. Alongside its debut, Ultron himself will finally become a playable character in Marvel Rivals. The mid-season update also includes significant balance changes to existing heroes and team-up abilities, refining the synergy between characters such as Black Widow and Punisher, while adjusting others like Jeff, Luna Snow, and Iron Fist.
